Description Despite its name, Spoon Knife Hollow can of course be used to make many kinds of concave shapes, like guksis, bowls, spoons for eating, serving, making soups. This knife is also perfect for shaping the inside of a shrink pot. Basically, only your imagination sets the limit. The concave shape of the inside of the blade facilitates honing and polishing of the edge, as opposed to more traditionally shaped cutting edges. Some skill is of course still required though. Keep in mind, if you need to regroud/sharpen the cutting edge, it might be a bit more challenging than a traditionally shaped edge. The concave forged shape of the inside makes the edge sharper, which means less resistance when working and a difference in chip removal. We make Spoon Knife Hollow in three shapes: Open, Rounded and Compound. With those three you can vary your technique and find a model of knife that suits your project the most. Spoon Knife Hollow Open, 14×65 mm: As the name implies, this model has a a gentle, open bend. It is perfect when carving a shallower spoon or ladle. Spoon Knife Hollow Rounded, 14×60 mm: This model has a calm and even shape of the bend. Not as shallow as the Open model. Spoon Knife Hollow Compound, 14×55 mm: The shape of the bend on this model is more accelerating, and it is quite similar to our appreciated Spoon Knife Large. This model is very useful for hollowing out both deep and shallow. Measurements: 14 mm = width of the blade towards the handle. 65/60/55 mm = measured diagonally over the opening of the blade, from the bottom towards the handle across to the tip. All models are available as both right and left. Read more about the difference between right and left models beneath. All models are available to order with a long handle. A long handle can sometimes provide extra strength, but can also obstruct you when making many changes in technique while carving. In other words, Spoon Knife Hollow is available in 12 different options. Which one is your favourite? The difference between right and left spoon knife: Right: If you are holding the right spoon knife in your right hand, you will carve towards you with it. Left: If you are holding the left spoon knife in your right hand, you will carve away from you with it. If you are left-handed, the spoon knives will function exactly the opposite way. You might need both of the knives since they are complementing each other very well. Sometimes you can’t reach with one of them and you don’t want to carve against the fibres, that is a perfect opportunity to try out the other one and carve in the other direction. The spoon knife is an excellent tool for when carving spoons, small bowls and carving in burls (burrs). If you want to become a good carver, one advice is to teach yourself to really make use of the hand that you are not holding the knife with. For instance, if you are carving with your right hand, away from you, you can use your left thumb to push the knife and, in that way, become stronger. Another word for spoon knife is hook knife.
